Dr Anthony Poon is an experienced consultant anaesthetist of over 20 years. Dr Poon has extensive experience in thoracic, shoulder, eye, colorectal, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), paediatric, major upper gastrointestinal, endoscopy and hand anaesthesia.
After studying medicine at the University of Melbourne for 6 years, Anthony entered anaesthetic training following time as a junior doctor. His 5 years of specialist anaesthetic training at St Vincent's Hospital culminated in a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, primarily in complex thoracic and paediatric anaesthesia.
Anthony worked as a consultant anaesthetist at St Vincent's and Box Hill public hospitals before concentrating in private anaesthetics.
Anthony also provides regular pro-bono medical services in developing countries where he teaches and performs voluntary anaesthesia. This has included trips to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) for cataract surgery (2019 and 2024), Suva (Fiji) for general anaesthesia (2003) and Guangzhou (China) for thoracic anaesthesia (2016).
In recognition of Anthony's long standing commitment to hospital and anaesthetic committees, Anthony has been appointed as the Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) at St Vincent's Private Hospital Melbourne. This was during the difficult time of the pandemic which required much leadership and commitment to the hospital.
Anthony is also involved in the broader operations of St Vincent's Hospital including supporting and being on the committee of the Capital Campaign to raise philanthropic money for the current redevelopment of St Vincent's Private Hospital Melbourne.
Dr Poon is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and is an active participant in their Continuing Professional Development. Anthony has also been recently admitted as a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
Outside of work he enjoys his family (which includes his wife, 3 daughters and dog), running, bike riding, golf, kayaking, gardening and wood working.
